The ISPlab network

The ISPlab simulates a full 1990s ISP backbone. The core of the 42718 ISP is a Cisco 7204VXR router with an NPE-400. For upstream internet the 7200 is connected to a PIX515E cluster. This allows me to separate the ISP lab from my home network (there is some more segmentation there) but the PIX firewalls simulate the upstream internet. The PIX firewalls also have two DMZ networks for the server VLAN and the management network.

The server VLAN hosts the SUN Cobalt (providing webhosting and email), the SUN SPARCclassic jumphost and an NFS storage box which is a bit too modern for the lab really, but good fun.

Downstream is more fun really. The 7200 connects to a Cisco 2911 using two 2Mbps serial links. The 2911 is used as a PSTN simulator. It originates two T1 links to the Livingston Portmaster and provides 24 analog ports for local modems and analog lines to the USR Netserver/16 and the SUN and Cisco dialin modems. WIP is to add a SIP trunk to the 2911 to allow outside inbound dialin.

The PIX firewalls, the 7200 and the 2911 all run RIPv2 to propagate IP subnets with the PIX originating a default route.

NB. the ISPlab is only powered up on-demand.
